New Years Eve

  • Black and white wonky quilt square

I was interested in improv quilts so I got the book, “Improv Quilting, Dancing With The Wall” by Irene Roderick. I made this wonky square first, and out of habit, squared it up. Not the definition of improv!

  • Black, white and red improv quilt square

I sewed random black, white and red strips together then attached them to a curved piece I tried. That was my first time really sewing curves.

  • Black and gray improv quilt square

I found this element difficult to put together. It’s hard to shift away from wanting to line edges up. The trick is to just sew and not think about it.

  • Improv quilt squares

I placed each piece up on my design wall. I did cut the edges straight so that they fit better.

  • Black, white, red, gray and blue improv quilt squares

I kept on sewing different elements using triangles, curves and wonky patch pieces. At this point, some of them didn’t line up but I later trimmed them to fit. This piece was made entirely with fabric from my scrap bin.

  • I was happy with how this came together so I added a white and black border to bring it together. Again, old habits, not improv!!

  • Improv quilt top

I free motioned quilted this on my longarm using a ruler for straight line stitching.
