Travel Quilt

  • Dashing Star quilt block

I saw an Instagram post of a small quilt that was made for an airplane trip. I thought that was a brilliant idea to have a quilt you can easily stow in a backpack or take along on a road trip. I settled on the Dashing Star block from the Missouri Star Quilt Company. The block is big - 24” square - and can be whipped up in no time.

  • Quilt clappers on a quilt block

These are wooden quilt clappers (similar to a tailor’s clapper) that I use to make flatter seams on the block. Once I iron the seam, I put the clapper on top for a few minutes and the edge becomes nice and flat.

  • sewing quilt blocks on a domestic machine

Here I’m sewing the block together in rows on my domestic machine.

  • quilt top on a longarm frame with longarm machine

I wanted this quilt to be thin so instead of using batting, I used a single layer of flannel. This entire quilt was made using leftover fabrics from other projects.—backing, flannel and the pieces for the top. I didn’t have enough of the interior background blue/green solid so I used another blue that I had in my stash.

  • close up of longarm sewing design

I quilted this on my longarm machine using an edge to edge pattern called Soho from Urban Elementz.

  • Close up of Dashing Star quilt block

I like that the rounded Soho pattern provides a nice contrast to the straight edges in the Dashing Star block.

  • quilt binding

I used a darker blue from my scrap bin for the binding. I use the clips to keep the binding tacked down until it is hand sewn in place.

  • colorful quilt

Do you recognize the crows from my Tranquil Triangles quilt? I had a leftover piece that was the perfect size for the back.

  • Pinwheel style quilt block with owls

Close up of the center of the star which is a pinwheel. I love the owl and flower print called Voysey from Moda Fabrics.
