City Sampler

  • Colorful modern quilt

I came across a 100 day challenge on social media. Using the “City Sampler, 100 Modern Quilt Blocks” book by Tula Pink, you were challenged to sew one block a day using any fabric of your choice. This block layout above, which I ultimately chose not to use, goes from light to dark. I ended up putting all of the blocks in a bag and randomly selecting each block and putting it on the design wall.

  • Close up of a modern quilt

I didn’t sew one block a day but rather 3-4 per week using scraps from my own fabric stash. I started in January 2023 and for the next 8 months, constructed the blocks. I randomly arranged the blocks in a 10 x 10 grid and put a small thin sashing between them. The dots in the above sashing soften the black while still giving each block a frame.

  • Modern quilt blocks

42 hours of free motion quilting on my longarm machine. Each of the 100 blocks has a different quilting motif.

  • Corner of a modern quilt

    Free-motion quilting.

  • More free-motion quilting.

  • I chose a traditional binding that matched the sashing material.

  • back of quilt, green

Quilt back that shows the quilting from the front. Probably not a good color choice or pattern for the back but quilting is a constant learning process.
